Building It Better

Old models of health care in the U.S. have created unsustainable cost increases, inconsistent outcomes and consumer dissatisfaction. They haven't kept pace with changes in technology — or the real-life needs of today's consumers. That's why Highmark Health is committed to a bold, transformational strategy to reinvent the health care system.

Investing in Value

Our value-based, patient-centered, physician-led delivery and financing model is the centerpiece of our strategy. But everywhere we touch the health care system, our purpose — and promise — is the same: getting health care right for our customers by improving access, quality and customer experiences while reducing costs.

Ongoing investments by Highmark Health and its affiliates to deliver on that promise include:

  • $700 million in new facility construction and existing facility expansion and renovation to improve access to affordable, high-quality health care services in western Pennsylvania
  • A strategic partnership between Penn State Health and Highmark Health that will invest more than $1 billion to develop a high-value, community-based health care network
  • $175 million in 2016 to update facilities, expand capacity and add new physicians throughout our health care delivery network and $115 million in 2017 to enhance health care facilities in Erie
  • $200 million committed to improving cancer care facilities and programs in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia
  • State-of-the-art, community-based health and wellness pavilions that improve access to primary care, specialty care, diagnostic tests, infusion therapies, and other outpatient services
  • The Highmark Cancer Collaborative, improving cancer treatment and helping to manage costs by bringing together our health plans, health care delivery network, and The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins
  • Strategic collaborations with industry innovators like Quartet, whose platform helps integrate mental health into primary care

Our annual report has more about our work to reinvent health care, and about the real measure of success: the experiences of our customers.

Millions of customers are living proof of the value of getting health care right.
