ERIE, Pa. (Feb. 10, 2017) — Officials from Highmark Health, Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and Saint Vincent Hospital today announced a $115 million multi-phased capital investment plan for Saint Vincent that will enhance the hospital's capabilities, expand its capacity to meet the evolving health needs of the community, and facilitate a patient-centered care model focused on quality, convenience, and service excellence.
Initially, the Saint Vincent investment plan includes construction of a new emergency department and a state-of-the-art operating room suite. Both facilities will be located in a new structure on the hospital campus that will extend from the existing Hardner Building at 2315 Myrtle Avenue to the north side of the hospital.
Saint Vincent will break ground on its new facilities in May, with construction extending over the next few years.
"Our vision and plans for the future of Saint Vincent Hospital represent another significant milestone in our organization's long history of support for the Erie community," said David Holmberg, president and CEO of Highmark Health. "Serving the communities of northwestern Pennsylvania through our health plan, charitable foundations, and provider network is a great privilege, and we are excited about the tremendous benefits our investments in Saint Vincent and elsewhere throughout the region will continue to have on the people who live and work here as part of our ongoing efforts to get healthcare right."
Cynthia Hundorfean, President and CEO of AHN, said the planned improvements in Saint Vincent are consistent with AHN's commitment to providing high-quality, comprehensive, healthcare services close to home for patients and their families.
"Across almost every corner of our Network, we are investing in our facilities, programs, and people to assure that the scope and quality of care we offer to patients is second to none," said Hundorfean. "Last year, we opened our beautiful Health + Wellness Pavilion here in Millcreek Township, and today we begin a transformation of Saint Vincent Hospital that will assure its 140 year-old legacy of clinical excellence and outstanding service to the community lives on for future generations."
Saint Vincent's new emergency department will be located on the ground level of the new building and designed to better accommodate the more than 65,000 patients who seek emergency care at the hospital each year. The department will feature spacious, comfortable waiting areas and the latest advanced technologies that help caregivers triage, diagnose, and treat patients more effectively and efficiently.
Located above the emergency department, the operating room suite will feature four new state-of-the-art rooms and allow for future operating room expansion and upgrades. The new rooms will be constructed to more easily accommodate advanced surgical technologies being used at Saint Vincent, such as the da Vinci minimally invasive robotic surgical system and the MAKO robotic system for hip and knee replacement.
Saint Vincent employs more than 400 physicians and has recently added a number of new surgeons to its medical staff, including specialists in orthopedics, bariatrics, neurosurgery, colorectal, cardiovascular, and general surgery.
"Providing exceptional, compassionate patient care is not just about investing in new buildings and technologies, but about always keeping the patient at the center of everything you do. That has been the bedrock of our mission at Saint Vincent since its inception, and we could not have found a better partner than Highmark Health to help us carry it forward," said Scott Whalen, Ph.D, FACHE, Saint Vincent President and CEO.
"Today's announcement is not only a celebration of our future, but a recognition of the thousands of dedicated caregivers who come to work every day at Saint Vincent and help make this hospital such a special place."
Whalen said information about additional components of the Saint Vincent capital investment plan will be announced in the weeks and months ahead as details are finalized.
