For a Visionworks customer: Technology that likely averted a stroke

At a Visionworks location in the Washington, D.C. area, one customer's story serves as an example of how the eye care retailer is getting health care right by offering technology that detects both eye problems and much more serious health risks.

In the fall of 2015, the customer, a 51-year-old woman, visited the Visionworks store for a routine eye exam. While conducting the exam, Dr. Negar Gohari, OD, saw irregularities and recommended that the woman agree to a retinal scan, offered on-site at the store, so that the doctor could examine her eyes more thoroughly.

The results? The woman's scans showed central retinal vein occlusion in the left eye and normal findings in the right eye. This indicated that the left eye was not receiving any oxygen.

Dr. Gohari immediately referred the woman to a retinal specialist, who also discovered the woman's blood pressure to be 280/110. Her primary care physician later indicated that the woman would most likely have suffered a stroke had she not been referred for her previously undiagnosed hypertension.

Full retinal scanning is now offered at hundreds of Visionworks locations and affiliated doctors’ offices. The retinal scanning image captures more than 80 percent of the retina in one panoramic image, whereas traditional methods only reveal 10 to 15 percent of the retina at one time. A benefit of the retinal scanning is that no digital history is required for comparison over time. And if not covered by a vision plan, Visionworks offers the full retinal scan for typically about $39.

Visionworks retailers across America are deeply committed to the overall health—and the vision—of their customers. Offering the most advanced technology at an affordable price is just one of the many ways that Visionworks is proud to be getting the care of its customers right, every day.
