Highmark Inc. and its Blue-branded affiliates proudly cover the insurance needs of nearly 5 million members in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia.

The Health Plan also upheld its historic commitment to improve the quality of life in the communities it serves to give back, reinvest, and ensure those communities remain as strong and healthy as possible. In 2016, the organization's corporate giving benefited hundreds of organizations across the health plans' service areas, donating more than $15 million in the areas of western, central, and northeastern Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Delaware. In addition, Highmark's signature program Walk for a Healthy Community along with Adopt-a-Schools programs initiated by employees in Pittsburgh and Erie and National Make a Difference Day of volunteering provided significant benefits to individuals and the communities the health plans proudly serve.

Highmark Inc. recognized among the "Healthiest Employers of Western Pennsylvania"
Highmark was one of nine companies in the 5,000+ employee category named among the "Healthiest Employers of Western Pennsylvania" by the Pittsburgh Business Times and the Healthiest Employers organization. The award recognizes organizations of all sizes and industries that are committed to creating a healthy workplace, and Highmark was recognized for its significant wellness efforts for employees and their families.
Highmark Inc. named a "Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality" by the Human Rights Campaign
In recognition of Highmark Health Plan’s supportive and inclusive culture for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning employees, the company has earned its first distinction as a "Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality" from the Human Rights Campaign. The Health Plan received the top score of 100 points in the 2017 national Corporate Equality Index, which benchmarks corporate policies and practices pertinent to LGBT employees. The Health Plan is one of six organizations in Pittsburgh to earn this designation, and one of only 22 companies in Pennsylvania.
As part of the award, the Health Plan was recognized for providing employees with equivalent spousal and domestic partner benefits for health, dental and vision coverage, and legal dependent coverage. The company also works to educate leaders and the workforce about understanding LGBTQ employees and customers.
The Health Plan was also recognized for participating in community activities that engage and include LGBTQ employees and that continue to build community partnerships.
Highmark Inc. honored with 2016 Fred Rogers Be a Good Neighbor Award
Highmark was among 10 Pittsburgh organizations recognized by the United Way, in partnership with the Fred Rogers Company, for their strong commitment to workplace and community volunteerism. Day of Caring, Be There program, Be a Middle School Mentor, Adopt a School, fitUnited, and Build-a-Bike were some of Highmark's employee volunteer efforts recognized during the awards ceremony.
Highmark West Virginia's Parkersburg office achieved the EPA's ENERGY STAR® certification
Highmark West Virginia earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) ENERGY STAR certification, signifying that the building performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA. To achieve the certification, the company identified opportunities to improve its energy performance by making cost-effective alterations to its building. Commercial buildings that earn EPA's ENERGY STAR certification use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
The Health Plan is supported by more than 77,000 in-network physicians, and it processed more than 120 million claims on behalf of customers in 2016.
Highmark Medicare Advantage plans received a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services STARS quality rating of 4.5 out of 5.0 STARS.
