For a veteran in need: A home refurbished by HMHS employees
Every year, the employees of HM Health Solutions (HMHS) select a charity to which they will direct their time and charitable donations. In 2015, Volunteers of America (VOA) was chosen. For more than 100 years, VOA has taken on the most difficult tasks to help the most vulnerable people. Annually, the humanitarian organization makes a positive impact on the lives of over 2 million people.
VOA estimates that there are as many as 50,000 homeless veterans across American every night. Through its Homeward Bound housing program, VOA purchases home for these veterans. HMHS worked with VOA to purchase a home for a veteran in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, area, and the work began.
The four-bedroom home was not in livable condition. Step-by-step, teams of HMHS employee volunteers tackled specific projects. They primed and painted nearly the whole home; fixed or replaced the kitchen cabinets; tilled and seeded the back yard to sprout a new lawn; and under the front porch, HMHS employees planted a new flower bed. All told, the home was completely refurbished.
HMHS is proud to give back to the communities where its employees live and work as part of its overall corporate philosophy.
At HMHS, getting health care right includes having a charitable cause and making a difference every year, for those in need. For all the companies of Highmark Health, that goal is all the more achievable because of the new Volunteer Day established corporate-wide in 2015 that provides every employee a day off work to do a "day on" of volunteering.
