Sponsorship, volunteers help MOM-n-PA provide dental care

Mission of Mercy in Pennsylvania, or MOM-n-PA, is a Shippensburg-based organization that has been providing free annual dental clinics at various locations across the state since 2013. Highmark Inc. has been a premier sponsor of the clinics since 2014.

This year, 970 volunteers took to Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to provide more than $1.2 million in dental care, such as cleanings, fillings, and extractions, to adults and children alike. Over the course of two days, more than 1,700 patients received treatments they may have otherwise been unable to afford.

"At Highmark, we are all about helping to create healthy communities, whether it's through our sponsorships and grants to local nonprofits providing health-related services to at-risk populations, or ensuring that our members have access to affordable, high-quality care," said Kathy McKenzie, vice president of community affairs at Highmark. "Because of the established link between oral health and overall health, this clinic is vitally important to the region."

In addition to the professional dentists and dental hygienists who served the needs of the Wilkes-Barre community, Highmark and United Concordia Dental employees volunteered to assist in logistical and organizational duties at the clinic. MOM-n-PA dental clinics sponsored by Highmark have previously been held in Allentown, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Erie, and Reading.
