Overview

Allegheny Health Network (AHN), a nonprofit, charitable organization, together with its subsidiaries and affiliates, serves western Pennsylvania and parts of neighboring states. Commencing operations in 2013, AHN is a $4.7 billion health and wellness organization that has more than 300 clinical locations, including 13 hospitals throughout western Pennsylvania and one in western New York; six Health + Wellness Pavilions; two sports medicine and performance campuses; a comprehensive research institute; ambulatory surgery centers; employed physician organizations; home- and community-based health services; and a group purchasing organization.

AHN employs about 22,000 people, has 2,600 physicians on its medical staff, is affiliated with two nursing regional schools, and serves as a clinical campus for Drexel University College of Medicine and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.

10 years of progress: AHN invests in the present, grows for the future

In 2023, U.S. News and World Report ranked AHN West Penn Hospital obstetrics and gynecological care best in its region and 30th in the nation.

In 2023, Allegheny Health Network celebrated its 10th anniversary — a decade of growth, transformation and investment in its caregivers and communities.

The growth continued during the year, with the expansion of pediatric inpatient services at AHN Wexford Hospital, the opening of a new skin cancer center at West Penn Hospital, the completion of a new imaging and breast center at the Bethel Park Health + Wellness Pavilion, and the opening of a new Health + Wellness Pavilion in North Fayette. The North Fayette pavilion, west of Pittsburgh, is now the seat for AHN's Center for Reproductive Medicine, among other specialties.

And there's more on the way. In November 2023, AHN announced that it will build a full-service hospital in Washington County, 15 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. The new, 300,000-square-foot AHN Canonsburg will replace the existing Canonsburg hospital facility and usher in a new era of expanded services and state-of-the-art capabilities to meet the diverse and growing health needs of the community.

Earlier in 2023, AHN unveiled plans for a new comprehensive Neuroscience Institute hub, now under construction at Allegheny General Hospital, and a new orthopaedic and sports medicine facility in Erie.

Significant investments were also made in AHN's people and caregivers last year. From wage and benefit enhancements, to programs and technological innovations aimed at improving the experience of caregivers and promoting joy in practice, to creating more flexible work schedules and career development opportunities for nurses, recruiting and retaining the best and brightest health care professionals continues to be one of AHN's highest priorities.

"Thanks to our unique role as the clinical innovator and pacesetter of Highmark Health's Living Health model, AHN is positioned for significant clinical transformation to serve our patients and communities more effectively," said Jim Benedict, president, AHN. "Over the past 10 years, we have built an incredibly strong foundation of facilities, programs and services and have capitalized on the amazing clinical expertise and passion of our caregivers to advance a model that is setting higher standards for care delivery, quality, access, health equity and affordability."
