Collaborating to create a remarkable health experience

The Living Health model leverages close collaboration between payers, providers, tech innovators and community organizations

The Living Health model leverages close collaboration between payers, providers, tech innovators and community organizations.

2023 was the 10th anniversary of forming Highmark Health as the parent organization connecting Blue-branded health plans in four states, a provider system in western Pennsylvania, and diversified businesses serving customers across the U.S.

While celebrating the many accomplishments across that decade, the organization's most notable developments were all about the future.

In a 2023 article, its president and CEO, David Holmberg, pointed to advances in the organization's Living Health model as "tangible examples of how we are evolving a consumer-focused, digitally empowering ecosystem of health, coverage and care. We are building the infrastructure necessary to unleash the power of health-related data, give it back to individuals and their care teams, and connect them to more choices and better, more proactive, personalized support."

Strategic collaboration plays a vital role in building that infrastructure. Collaborations with Google Cloud and League drove the 2023 launch of a "one-stop shop" app that represents the first iteration of Living Health's integrated health experience platform. Even in the first iteration, the app gives health plan members convenient access to an impressive array of personalized tools and resources. The platform will continue to expand, connecting more and more of a person's health experience in one place. Clinician-focused components of the platform are also in progress.

Other collaborators, like Sword, provide digitally enabled care solutions for conditions like back and neck pain, type 2 diabetes and more. The organization has seen promising results for these solutions in member engagement and satisfaction, in clinical measures and in feedback from users. Collaboration with Cedar Pay has created a simpler billing and payment experience that has nearly 90% customer satisfaction. In October of 2023, the organization announced another valuable collaboration — with Spring Health — which will expand access points to behavioral health care by 40%.

These strategic collaborations have a parallel with the traditional health insurer responsibility of creating high-quality provider networks. With Living Health, Highmark Health takes on the responsibility of assessing, selecting and integrating high-performing technology and community partners to ensure that health plan members have access to high-quality digital, virtual and community resources for health, as well as to hospitals and clinical facilities.

"The Living Health model is fundamentally collaborative, with the consumer at the center, not us," Holmberg explained. "Whether it's a provider system, a technology company or a community organization addressing social determinants of health, we are proving how much more we can accomplish when we align around a commitment to improving health outcomes and creating a remarkable health experience."
