As a leading dental solutions partner, United Concordia Dental focuses on the connection between oral health and overall wellness — and how it can improve total health.

As ongoing research emphasizes the mouth-body connection, United Concordia Dental continues making strategic investments to improve the total health and well-being of the customers and communities it serves.

In 2023, advancing Medical-Dental Integration (MDI) efforts was a key area of focus for the national dental solutions partner. Built on the foundation that all aspects of wellness are connected, MDI aims to help deliver improved overall health outcomes through increased collaboration between dentists and physicians.

One example is United Concordia Dental's investment in the merging of Epic (health care) and Wisdom (dental) patient record platforms across Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Dental Medicine and AHN facilities in Pittsburgh.

"The implementation of electronic health record technology is a huge step forward in enabling patients — and their dentists and physicians — to have a more holistic view of their total health to support improved outcomes," said Roosevelt Allen, DDS, MAGD, ABGD, chief dental officer, United Concordia Dental. "At the same time, it provides an opportunity to identify and address any gaps in care."

Along with technology investments related to MDI, United Concordia Dental educated producers, employers, and medical and dental professionals on the oral-systemic health link and reinforced the importance of an integrated approach to care. A dental integration consultant was also hired to spearhead MDI priorities and specifically focus on increasing collaboration between medicine and dentistry.

Investments in mobile dental care are further amplifying the company's commitment to total health. In 2023, United Concordia Dental deployed its mobile dental unit on a 15-city tour across Pennsylvania, with volunteer dentists and dental hygienists providing free services, such as exams, cleanings, X-rays and fluoride applications, to 800 children, youth and seniors.

The company is also doing its part to make dental education more accessible and to help increase diversity in the oral health workforce — awarding $270,000 in scholarship funding to dental and dental hygiene students nationwide in 2023.
