For its comprehensive efforts to attract, develop and retain people with disabilities in its workforce, Highmark Health was named a 2018 "Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion" in the Disability Equality Index® (DEI®), a national benchmarking survey administered jointly by the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and Disability:IN®.

Highmark Health named among Top Ten Marketers in North America at 2018 Effie Awards Gala

Highmark Health was named as one of the Top 10 Marketers in North America for campaigns in both its health care insurance and provider businesses during the North American Effie Awards Gala. Highmark Health is one of only two health care companies to have achieved this distinction since 2011, and the only health care company to have made finalist in three different campaigns in one year.

VITAL Innovation Program awarded Brand Excellence Award for Brand Innovation

Highmark Health's VITAL Innovation Program, a test-and-learn platform that can help propel new health solutions into the marketplace, was awarded the Brand Excellence Award for Brand Innovation by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) in 2018. The award annually recognizes an innovative program that provides measurable impact to customers and the BCBSA brands.

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield honored with 2018 Fred Rogers Good Neighbor Award

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield was honored with a 2018 Fred Rogers Good Neighbor Award by the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania and the Fred Rogers Company for making a positive impact in the community through volunteerism. It was recognized as an organization whose dedication to workplace volunteerism helps United Way provide vital services to thousands of people in the community, and for its employee volunteer efforts with Day of Caring, Be A Middle School Mentor, Adopt a School, fitUnited, Games for Good, and Build-a-Bike.

In 2018, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield was recognized with an Excellent Service Profile Award by the Federal Employee Program (FEP). The award recognizes Blue Plans that provide FEP members with high-quality customer service and claims processing experiences.

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield received the Erie's Choice: Best Health Insurance Award in 2018. Each year, the Erie-Times News collects votes from residents across the state to honor Erie's favorite businesses.

Omar Khawaja, Chief Information Security Officer, recognized

Omar Khawaja, Chief Information Security Officer, was recognized for his program to introduce Factor Analysis of Information Risk (FAIR) to the world of health care infosecurity. He received the Business Innovation Award during the 2018 FAIR Conference held at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Allegheny Health Network

AHN surgical oncologist honored with national distinguished service award

Allegheny Health Network surgical oncologist Norman Wolmark, MD was named a recipient of 2018's "Charles M. Balch Distinguished Service Award" for his work with the NSABP Foundation. Dr. Wolmark is an internationally recognized cancer surgeon and medical director of Surgery and Cancer Program Development, AHN Department of Surgery and Cancer Institute, and he is also Chairman of NSABP Foundation, a not-for-profit academic research organization led by AHN clinicians with a 60-year history of conducting groundbreaking research studies in breast and colorectal cancers.

AHN earns more honors at annual Health Care Heroes awards event

For the sixth consecutive year, AHN earned more honors than any health care provider at the annual Health Care Heroes awards event, staged by the Pittsburgh Business Times. The 2018 AHN honorees were: David Parda, MD (Career Achievement Award); Susan Manzi, MD (Health Care Provider — Physician Award); Kenyokee Crowell (Health Care Executive Award); Allison Freeman, MD (Health Care Provider — Physician Award); Marta Kolthoff, MD (Health Care Provider — Physician Award); AHN Addiction Medicine Care Team (Health Care Provider — Non Physician Award); Judith Schaad (Community Outreach Award); Linda Leonard (Community Outreach Award); Becky Orler and Holly Chapman (Health Care Provider —Non Physician Award); and Craig Smith (Volunteer Award).

Jefferson Hospital receives $1 million grant to build a socially responsive emergency department

Jefferson Hospital was named the recipient of a $1 million, four-year grant from the Jefferson Regional Foundation to establish the "Front Door Initiative for Social Emergency Medicine" at Jefferson — a comprehensive effort to better understand and address the social determinants of health among patients who visit the hospital's emergency department. It is the single largest grant ever issued by the Jefferson Regional Foundation.

HM Insurance Group companies receive an A rating from A.M. Best Company

HM Life Insurance Company and HM Life Insurance Company of New York were assigned an A rating by A.M. Best, a global credit rating agency that focuses on the insurance industry. The ratings reflect the level of the company's financial strength and stability.

Charitable Foundations

Red Cross Hero Award — Disaster Relief and Recovery

When the United States was hit by back-to-back hurricanes last fall, the Highmark Health organization stepped to the plate, deploying physicians, nurses, paramedics, and other specialists to the impacted areas to treat people in need. Highmark Health also worked to replace lost medications and donated much-needed financial resources to the hurricane relief effort.

Highmark Health affiliate Allegheny Health Network receives award for corporate citizenship

Highmark Health and its subsidiaries and affiliates partner with local charities by providing money, volunteers, and advisory services. One such example is the support for Project Destiny Inc., a North Side-based nonprofit founded in 2004 that provides resources, support groups, and cultural and educational activities for children in need and their families.
