I am deeply honored to have been elected as the chairman of the board of Highmark Health, the parent organization for a group of companies that have been trusted partners to customers, members and patients for as long as 150 years. The companies that make up the Highmark Health enterprise have worked collaboratively over the course of generations to provide exceptional care and service to individuals and families. And they’ve been true to their social commitments to support local communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. We are fortunate to include such a rich history, and to have a dedicated workforce and clear strategy to build upon to create a health care system that puts people first.
This is a particularly dynamic time for our enterprise. We have successfully navigated the marketplace in the wake of health care reform, responded to heightened competition, and continued the drive to diversify so that we have a broad base from which to serve customers. Consumers overall are taking more responsibility for their health care. And Highmark Health will respond by continuing to create a new, high-quality and affordable health care model based on our deep customer insights.
On behalf of all of us at Highmark Health, I want to express my appreciation to Bob Baum, who has served Highmark Health and its affiliate companies for 35 years as a board member, chairman and acting chief executive officer. Bob provided inspired leadership at critical junctures, and he will be remembered by all who worked with him for his calm presence, thoughtfulness and genuine interest in the people we serve and in the business he helped guide. I hope you will take the time to view our video tribute to Bob.
