Community Highlights: Health Plans

Catherine Conway, third-year osteopathic medical student and native of West Mifflin, Pa., was one the first recipients of a scholarship that Highmark is supporting for students attending the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM).

Highmark helps to address the primary care shortage

Throughout its 75-year history, Highmark and its predecessors have demonstrated a strong commitment to ensuring that members have access to affordable, high-quality care — a commitment that extends to all the communities the company serves. Recognizing that many physicians serving rural Pennsylvania communities will be retiring in the next several years, Highmark is partnering with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) to identify medical students who will be making a commitment to practicing primary care in the areas that need physicians the most.

Highmark has committed $500,000 over five years to create scholarships for LECOM Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine graduates. Scholarship recipients will go on to practice primary care in a medical shortage area after they graduate, ensuring individuals across Pennsylvania will continue to have access to high-quality health care.
