Community Highlights: Health Plans

Representatives from nonprofit Practice Without Pressure lead walkers through Bellevue State Park in Wilmington, Del., during the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community.

Highmark Walk expands to Delaware to benefit nonprofit organizations

Since 2003, the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community has helped more than 200 nonprofit organizations across the areas served by Highmark raise more than $7.8 million for their individual missions. This year, a new walk was launched in Wilmington, Del. More than 1,300 people participated in the first-ever Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community in Delaware, raising $82,000 for 17 Delaware organizations.

The Delaware event joins established walks in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Erie, Lehigh Valley and Johnstown, Pa. For each of the walks, Highmark health plans handle all the logistics and underwrite all costs associated with the events, while walkers select which participating nonprofit organization they wish to support. The nonprofits then keep 100 percent of the funds raised by their walkers.
