Innovation gains momentum
In 2014, the Highmark Health enterprise forged ahead with innovations that are reshaping the health care landscape through new collaborations, improved consumer experiences and fresh solutions to difficult challenges.
In October, Allegheny Health Network (AHN), unveiled the future of health care to residents of western Pennsylvania at its new 174,000-foot Wexford Health + Wellness Pavilion. This state-of-the-art facility offers unparalleled community-based convenience through its one-stop health care experience that provides access to a variety of health care specialists under one roof.
In 2013, Highmark Health and Allegheny Health Network announced a multi-year commitment to collaborate with Carnegie Mellon University through the Disruptive Health Technology Institute (DHTI). The institute is aimed at increasing affordability, simplicity and accessibility of health care by identifying key unmet clinical needs and addressing them with advanced medical technologies. In 2014, Highmark Health renewed its support of the DHTI by awarding $1.7 million to projects that include reducing the toxic effects of anti-cancer drugs; developing a tool to improve self-breast cancer screenings; developing a microscopic device that reduces the amount of counterfeit drugs from entering the legitimate supply chain; and improving detection techniques of early stage melanoma lesions.
In December, Highmark's Business Innovation and Development group completed development of a new bricks-and-mortar retail innovation to help remedy a health problem encountered by 80 million Americans: sleeplessness. The REMWorks Sleep Store was opened in The Waterfront, in Homestead, Pa., as a pilot project. The store offers sleep coaches who provide education and sleep plans, as well as remedies ranging from sleep masks and lighting solutions to soothing bedding and pillows, aromatherapy products and white-noise machines. The REMWorks Sleep Store accepts health insurance from most regional and national insurance carriers for clinical services provided.
